6 houses, 10 apartments with a collective garden
Residential project Beghardi is located on the site of the former hospital De Voorzorg in the center of Mechelen. The built-up site will be transformed into a green porous project with 16 living units. The expressive façade as well as the existing front-gabled house will be preserved and transformed into a city palace with three apartments and two studios. A new front-gabled house with three light apartments will be built on the left, whereof the design is aligned to the rhythm and structure of the street.
The dwellings are situated around a walled collective garden as a green oasis where the residents can barbecue, read a book… Low brick walls define the paths and terraces and create a buffer between the private terraces and the central seating area. The diverse plants around the center creates an extra buffer between private and collective and provides an inspiring garden where the residents can relax.
The design of the volumes interacts with the rhythm of the facades and the surrounding urban fabric. The project consists of various residential typologies (apartments in the city palace, duplex houses for starters, terraced houses and townhouses) which can attract a diversity of people.
